THE START OF SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL

Years of unanswered questions led me back to the wisdom of my foremothers.

Like many women, I searched for answers to persistent health challenges and grew weary of being told that I could not trust my own understanding of my body or the restorative wisdom of traditional herbal medicine. That search led me back home to West Africa where I immersed myself in the philosophies of simple living and the botanical traditions that have nurtured generations of women before me.

There, I rediscovered a living lineage.

For more than fourteen generations, the women in my family have preserved botanical knowledge passed carefully from mother to daughter. Much of this wisdom survived through oral tradition, entrusted to memory rather than manuscripts, while elements of our family's history remain preserved within royal archives and regional museums throughout Old Calabar. Our original herbal preparations, some dating to 1611, continue to guide the work we do today.

My grandmother embodied this inheritance. She had strong hands shaped by years of preparing medicinal botanicals, a deep and reassuring voice, piercing eyes that missed very little, and beautiful dark skin that felt like silk. She taught that caring for the body was never separate from caring for the mind, the heart, or the spirit. Beauty was not pursued as vanity, but cultivated as an expression of health, discipline, and self-respect.

Among the Efik aristocracy of Old Calabar, young women from families of distinction were traditionally prepared for adulthood in mbodi, often known as "fattening rooms." Far more than places of nourishment, they were spaces of learning where women received instruction in wellness, domestic leadership, cultural traditions, hospitality, and the botanical knowledge that would accompany them throughout life. It is within this broader cultural inheritance that our philosophy continues to evolve.

Today, we honor these traditions while formulating for the needs of modern skin. Our preparations combine original family recipes with contemporary cosmetic science, guided by the principles of corneotherapy to support the skin's barrier function and overall condition. Every formulation reflects a conversation between ancestral knowledge and thoughtful innovation - never one at the expense of the other.

Our botanical philosophy remains rooted in West Africa, where we purposefully partner with women-led farming cooperatives whenever possible to source indigenous botanicals responsibly and respectfully. We also work with trusted growers and distillers across North Africa, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States, selecting each ingredient for its quality, character, and origin rather than geography alone.

Every botanical, oil, resin, and extract is carefully evaluated before it enters our atelier, where each preparation is handcrafted in the United States in small batches. Inspired by the principles of biodynamic agriculture, we work in harmony with seasonal rhythms, honoring patience, observation, and respect for the living qualities of plants throughout our creative process.

The result is a collection of botanical skincare and wellness preparations created to nurture the body, mind, heart + spirit™. An enduring philosophy passed quietly from one generation to the next.
